Carbonzero partners with Beanfield Metroconnect on path towards Carbon Neutrality

Carbonzero and Beanfield Metroconnect are pleased to announce a partnership that will support Beanfield on its path towards corporate carbon neutrality across its operations in Ontario and Quebec. The two companies will work together to create a corporate greenhouse gas (GHG) inventory for Beanfield, identify carbon reduction strategies, and achieve carbon neutrality under the Carbonzero Certified program.

In recent years, it has primarily been large and global technology companies committing to corporate social responsibility pledges that address some of the world’s issues like climate change, but Beanfield’s actions in 2021 demonstrate that small and medium enterprise can also play a key role. While Beanfield’s small neighbourhood roots are still at the company’s core, its fibre optic network has grown to be a premier and well-recognized technology solution in Canada and its locally delivered residential and business internet services are among the top-ranked in Toronto and Montreal.

Partnership Details

Through the partnership, Carbonzero will support Beanfield Metroconnect in the completion of the company’s Scope 1, 2 and select Scope 3 GHG Emissions Inventory. This will mark the first time that Beanfield Metroconnect has completed a corporate GHG Inventory, with their initial efforts focusing on measuring the carbon footprint of the company’s building portfolio, network of data centres, fleet of vehicles, and staff business travel.

“Beanfield has always been determined to create positive change in the neighbourhoods we serve, and we strive to build better communities for the future”, said Dan Armstrong, Founder and CEO of Beanfield. “As we continue to grow, we feel that it is more important than ever to reflect on our business operations and practices to help make them more sustainable and reduce our carbon footprint. Our partnership with Carbonzero has given us the opportunity to accelerate our long-term environmental goals and be a leader for other growing businesses. We are thrilled to integrate this into our everyday operations and we plan to build on this to create positive change in the communities we call home.”

While long-term carbon neutrality remains the goal for Beanfield, the company has already embarked on a series of initiatives that help to manage and lower the company’s greenhouse gas footprint. One of the most notable projects in recent years has been the continued replacement of the company’s gas-powered fleet vehicles in preference for electric vehicles (EVs).

As a result of the clean electricity grids in Ontario and Quebec that are charging Beanfield’s EVs, the initiative is achieving an estimated 8,000 - 10,000 kg of CO2-equivalent reductions per year for every vehicle that is replaced with an electric option. At the beginning of 2021, EVs made up approximately 20% of the Beanfield corporate vehicle fleet and their continued adoption represents a key area for future emissions reductions for the company.

“Carbonzero is very excited to share the details of our important work with Beanfield on the company’s carbon neutrality commitments as part of their broader ESG program”, said Liam Conway, VP Advisory Services at Carbonzero, “We are looking forward to working alongside Beanfield as we support them in achieving their environmental goals.”

As Beanfield and Carbonzero look ahead to their partnership in 2021, both companies are excited for what lies ahead. Beanfield’s efforts on its carbon neutral program are a great example of how small and medium-sized enterprises can bring sustainability solutions into their direct operations. Carbonzero and Beanfield Metroconnect are looking forward to a successful partnership for many years to come.
