The Wineries of Niagara-on-the-Lake and Carbonzero Offset Greenhouse Gas Emissions

November 5, 2010

NEWS RELEASE FOR IMMEDIATE USE The Wineries of Niagara-on-the-Lake and Carbonzero Offset Greenhouse Gas Emissions NIAGARA-ON-THE-LAKE, ON (FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 5, 2010) The 22 Wineries of Niagara-on-the-Lake (WNOTL), in partnership with Carbonzero, have applied a portion of each 2010 Taste the Season Touring Pass towards the purchase of 133 tonnes CO2e worth of Carbon Offsets from the Integrated Gas Recovery Services Inc. (IGRS) Niagara East Landfill Gas Utilization Project, located in Niagara Falls. “The WNOTL are committed to sustainable viniculture, winemaking and winery tourism practices.

As such, we are aware that a Touring Pass event like Taste the Season, does create some GHG emissions-producing activities, like guests driving toNiagara-on-the-Lake,” said Roselyn Dyck-Cieszkowski, Committee Chair, Taste the Season, “By purchasing Carbon Offsets we are doing our part to minimize GHG emissions our event creates by investing in GHG reduction initiatives happening in our own backyard.” The Niagara East Landfill Gas Utilization Project controls methane and improves the air quality for the surrounding region. By investing in this project, the WNOTL are able to support a homegrown environmental initiative that enhances their own sustainability measures.

Carbon offsetting is an innovative way to take positive action on climate change. Carbon Offsets are verified reductions of GHG emissions, designed to help minimize climate change by compensating or off-setting an emissions-producing activity. By investing in improved efficiency, improved environmental controls, conservation initiatives and changes in behaviour, offset purchasers like WNOTL, take responsibility for the emissions they are unable to reduce by investing in GHG reductions elsewhere. Taste the Season is the WNOTL’s ‘go-to’ event of the season and the kick-off to the events of Winter in Niagara-on-the-Lake Wine Country. It takes place November 6/7, 13/14, 20/21, 27/28 from 11 am to 5 pm. Each of the 22 wineries features a seasonal pairing of Niagara-on-the-Lake VQA (Vintners Quality Alliance) wine and local culinary item. Touring Passes are $44.25 per person, exclusive of taxes. Each Touring Pass entitles the holder to a VQA wine and food pairing at each of the member wineries and is valid for one of the featured weekends.
