What is an Offset?
A carbon offset is a real and verified reduction of greenhouse gas emissions. Developed to compensate or "offset" an equivalent greenhouse gas emission from another source that cannot be easily eliminated by improved efficiency, conservation initiatives or changes in behaviour, carbon offsets help mitigate climate change by creating a financial mechanism for change.
Permanent Reductions
Offsets can be created when projects are undertaken to reduce, prevent or sequester GHG emissions. This can be achieved in many ways, such as retrofitting of a building, the reduction of fossil fuel consumption, or the displacement of a non-renewable energy source by a wind turbine.
Additionality
In order to qualify as emissions credits, offsets must finance projects that would otherwise not have Carbonzero’s offset projects pass additionality tests to ensure offset quality.
